Marco Polo Malta Hostel

The worst hostel experience I've ever had. Almost €500 disappeared from my locker. What disappointed me the most was not only the theft itself, but the way the hostel handled the situation. One morning, I accidentally locked my key card inside my locker. A housekeeper opened it using a staff key card to help me retrieve it and clearly saw the cash inside. Before leaving for an excursion, I made sure my locker was locked. The next morning, almost €500 had disappeared. Only the euros were missing; my Romanian currency was still there. I immediately reported the incident and asked the hostel to investigate. I specifically requested that they check whether my locker had been accessed with any staff key cards. The manager initially told me this was impossible because staff card access could not be seen in their system.I then contacted the owner on WhatsApp, but instead of responding, he blocked me immediately. Later, I managed to speak with him in person. After initially refusing to engage, he eventually confirmed that he had checked the access records and that my locker had indeed been opened with a housekeeper's key card. This completely contradicted what the manager had previously told me. He promised to investigate further, speak with the housekeeper involved, and get back to me. He never did. During my stay, I also learned that another guest had reported around €300 missing from her locker in a different room. She received a similar response: guests are responsible for their belongings, and these were described as "only two isolated incidents." I reported the incident to the police, but I was informed that pursuing the case could require me to return to Malta at my own expense if it went to court. To make matters worse, after I contacted Booking.com, the property allegedly told them that they had determined I had not had any cash with me at all. This was simply false. After the theft, I had no cash left and had to rely entirely on my card for the remaining six days of my holiday. Throughout the entire situation, I felt that the hostel's priority was to dismiss the issue rather than properly investigate it. I cannot say who took the money, but I expected transparency, a serious investigation, and clear communication. Instead, I received contradictory information, false claims about my situation, no meaningful updates, and no resolution. Also, the cleanliness was also poor, and there was an unpleasant smell throughout the room. I would never stay here again, and I cannot recommend this hostel to anyone. Losing almost €500 was devastating, but what hurt even more was the complete lack of transparency, empathy, and genuine effort to investigate what happened.

Patricia was an amazing guide! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole tour fun and engaging. She shared fascinating stories about Malta's history and culture, answered everyone's questions with enthusiasm, and gave us great local recommendations. The tour was well organized, and I discovered places I would never have found on my own. I highly recommend this free tour with Patricia to anyone visiting Malta! Honestly, nothing. Everything was well organized and enjoyable. The only downside was that the tour ended too soon because it was so interesting!

The bed wasn't very comfortable, as I could feel the mattress springs when lying down.

This was my third time staying at Marco Polo Hostel, and once again I had a great experience. The hostel is always clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the location is excellent with easy access to public transport, restaurants, and tourist attractions. I will definitely stay here again on my next visit to Malta. Honestly, I didn't have any major issues during my stay. Everything met my expectations, and the overall experience was very good.

Biggest reason I'm giving 5 stars is *Paty, the tour guide*. She is the heart of Marco Polo. She looks after everyone and make sure no one feels left out. Big love and respect for patricia. ❤️

Having the AC to be turned on only between 10 pm to 10 am is annoying especially in such a hot country during the summer. Sometimes i wanted to lay down during the bed to relax and i was sweating alot.

The place is pretty run down. We lost power (only on the floor I was staying on) for a few hours one day making the key fobs and air conditioning not work. Also saw a few cockroaches around the hotel and it is just generally pretty unclean

Todos mal educados e mal humorados, eles alegam ser um party hostel e parece que os hóspedes estão fazendo um favor pra eles se hospedando lá, se você quiser ser tratado como cachorro pode ficar lá, mas nao recomendo, a localização é boa mas muitos outros também são e o transporte público de malta é ótimo

Super good location and was perfect.

Unfortunately, the air conditioning operates only during specific hours, which is highly inconvenient. With the onset of the summer season, guests often wake up during the early morning due to the excessive heat, only to find that the air conditioning has been switched off. This significantly affects comfort and the overall quality of the stay.

Close to everything good for the money

Well, I made a mistake with booking but the staff was charging me more and giving me a worse room. Once I checked the room, I asked if I can get refund and the staff was like " it is not refundable", well, I was referring to the extra money they charged not the entire money even but anyway the owner or manager showed up and then he was very supportive of the refund of the extra payment which I appreciate but I was lucky he was there otherwise the staff would have just charged me extra for giving me a room that didn't have windows not even a proper lock for double the money I booked the original room.

They have a lot of activities every night and staff is friendly.

The photos on the website clearly do not reflect the current reality — they were most likely taken years ago. What I saw was so far from my expectations that I refused to stay and, without even thinking about the money I had paid, I found another place to stay. I’m writing this review sincerely so that you don’t make the same mistake by trusting misleading or unrealistic reviews. Everything

Location Loud music, late night

Stuff was good. Bathroom's,toilet's doors normal don't closing.In kitchen,bathroom,toilet was not napkins for after cleaning hands.
